The total capacity thus reached about 5.8 lakh tons in 1924 , against an annual demand of 3.9 lakhs . इस प्रकार सन् 1924 में कुल क्षमता वार्षिक मांग 3.9 लाख टन से भी कहीं अधिक 5.8 लाख टन तक पहुंच गयी .

In 1981 it had a capacity of about 1 million tonnes which was about 4 per cent of total capacity in the country . कुल सन् 1981 तक निगम ने दस लाख टन की क्षमता सऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-थापित कर ली थी जो कुल क्षमता से 4 प्रतिशत अधिक थी .

The partition of the country deprived the industry of a capacity of 5 lakhs tons , but new factories continued to be set up in the following years and , by the end of 1950 , India had a total capacity of 3.1 million tons . देश के विभाजन से उद्योग को 5 लाख टन की क्षमता की हानि हुई लेकिन आने वाले वर्षों में नयी नयी फैक़्ट्रियों की स्थापना होती रही और सन् 1950 के अंत तक , भारत की कुल क्षमता 31 लाख टन थी .

Total capacity realised in 1984-85 was only 12.54 million tonnes or 2 million tonnes short of the target and production was 8.8 million tonnes , i.e . 2.7 million tonnes less than the target , These shortfalls were due to the dismal performance of the public sector plants . सन् 1984-85 में कुछ प्राप्त क्षमता केवल 125.4 लाख टन अर्थात् लक्ष्य से 20 लाख टन कम तथा कुल प्राप्त उपयोगिता 88 लाख टन अर्थात् लक्ष्य से 27 लाख टन कम था.यह Zकमियां सार्वजनिक क्षेत्रों के संयंत्रों के निराशाजनक कार्य परिणाम के Zकारण थीं .
